Mysore

When you visit Mysore, you visit the “City of Palaces” or the “Sandal Wood City of India”. It is one of the few modern cities that has not lost touch with its rich cultural and historical legacy. The splendor of the city lies in its royal buildings, gardens and temples.

The Mysore Palace is the most outstanding example of the Indo Saracenic style of architecture. It was the residence of the royal family of the Wodayars. Even today the palace retains the ambience with which the royal family reigned in the Kalyana Mantap, Durbar Hall, and the Golden Royal Elephant Throne. Every Sunday the entire palace along with its adjoining temples and huge entrances are illuminated for an hour. An illuminated Mysore Palace is a spectacular sight to watch. For an hour it turns into a castle from the fairy tales and taking your eye off even for a moment becomes impossible.

The Jaganmohan Palace is another royal palace in Mysore. It has been converted into an art gallery. The gallery houses the paintings and the miniatures of the 19th century.

One of the most popular spots is the Chamundi hills. A temple dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari is located on top of the hills. The temple is very exquisitely carved. From atop you get a birds eye view of Mysore city. The serene and unpolluted surroundings at the top can be very soothing. This major landmark is a favorite destination for the local people as well.

Another very famous landmark in Mysore is the KRS dam and the adjoining Brindavan Gardens. You won’t come across another garden like the Brindavan gardens in other parts of India. Once the sun sets the garden comes alive with colorfully lit dancing fountains. The well manicured green lawns and numerous plants are a great treat to the eyes.

The well maintained Mysore zoo, the oldest zoo in the country, is a place worth visiting. Equipped with the most modern facilities the Zoo is a pioneer in breeding animals in captivity. Tigers, lions, giraffes, zebras, chimps can be found in open air enclosures. Battery powered vehicles can take you around for a ride.

The Philomena Church is another major monument of the city.  The Church is famous for its 175 feet high spires.

Mysore, is dotted by three lakes. The karanji Lake and the Kukrahalli Lake are a haven for migratory birds.  Set in lush green surroundings you can enjoy some peaceful moments here.

No city in India, can enthuse you with a splendid royal feeling as Mysore can.
